Ah, book club night...

Last night was book club night. This is something I really look forward to each month and find super refreshing. I feel inspired to make a list. :)

Reasons why I love book club:
  • A good excuse to read one more book every month
  • Getting to discuss a book with people who have also read it (well, usually) ;)
  • Reading books I might not pick on my own
  • Connecting with other women
  • Good conversation
  • Downtown dining
  • No cooking required
  • More importantly, no clean up required
Those are a few of my reasons.

I think I should keep a book journal. Somewhere to write down the titles I read and if I enjoyed it and a few details about the book. Too quickly I forget what a book is about once I have moved on to a new one.

If you want to read a piece of fiction about a book club group, try Dinner With Anna Karenina by Gloria Goldreich. Warning, I read it in early 2006 so I can't be certain of the contents at this point. ;) However, I do remember there are discussions about well known books and these discussions make you, as the reader, feel like a part of their book club. These characters have a common bond through their love of reading and their relationships are based on that bond. I love that idea!

I have been blessed in my life to have wonderful friendships with many different women. I think this book club is just an extension of my desire to build lasting relationships.

I think I joined our book club for all those reasons too, but most importantly to have a reason to plow through a nearly 600 page book in 1 month!! I would still be in the first 10 chapters if I didn't have that deadline!! I think we have a great group of gals to discuss our books and our lives with and its always something to look forward to each month. Now I'm going to have to find that book you recommended!

I forgot another important reason... having leftovers for lunch the day after book club. MMM...Spaghetti Factory lasagna. ;)

Book club is definitely about so much more than the books! I really appreciate the time with fantastic women and, of course, the scrumptious food (including leftovers!!). We've chosen some great books and I look forward to hearing what everyone picks.

I haven't been in a book club since we were in Bloomington -- I definitely miss it for all of the reasons you mention for enjoying it -- though I was never very good at plowing through the books on time : )
